Respiratory theories of panic disorder have focused on disturbances in blood gas regulation, but respiratory muscle tension as a source of dyspnea has not been considered. We therefore examined the potential of intercostal muscle tension to elicit dyspnea in individuals with high anxiety sensitivity, a risk factor for developing panic disorder.
This video covers the anatomy of the external, internal and innermost intercostal muscles, their origin, insertion, innervation and functions. Test yourself
During breathing, the ribcage should be in a position to be able to expand in order to accommodate movement of lungs. If for some reason the ribcage gets tight, then the amount of air taken in by lungs is less. How to Cope with an Intercostal Muscle Strain. Whether it’s a cough that won’t quit or the price of working out too hard, intercostal muscle strain can be painful.

The intercostal muscles are a group of 22 pairs of tiny muscles found between the ribs. These muscles play a vital role in the movement of the chest during breathing. They also help to solidify the thoracic region and protect the lungs.
The muscles of respiration (respiratory muscles) are those skeletal muscles that contribute to inhalation and exhalation, by aiding in the expansion and contraction of the thoracic cavity. The diaphragm and, to a lesser extent, the intercostal muscles drive respiration during quiet breathing . “The intercostal muscles are a group of 22 pairs of tiny muscles found between the ribs.
Prolonged shallow breathing disengages some of the vital respiratory muscles (Intercostal muscles. Clavicular muscles and Diaphragm) from contributing to a healthy breath. These muscles need to be re-engaged for fuller breath by retraining them for the same.
· Chest pain when coughing, sneezing, or breathing. · Pain when twisting, curling up, or stretching the rib cage.
In addition to the lungs, your respiratory system includes the trachea (windpipe), muscles of the chest wall and diaphragm, blood vessels, and tissues that make breathing and gas exchange possible. The external intercostals are small muscles located in between each rib, starting at the first rib and extending down to the 11th rib. The motions of these muscles assist the lungs by raising the ribs and expanding the chest cavity. This added room in the chest cavity allows for the lungs to fill with air each time a person takes a breath in. Along with the diaphragm, the intercostal muscles are one of the most important groups of respiratory muscles.
